Who can enter this category?
This category recognises good energy efficiency practice in public sector organisations. Entries are invited from central, regional and local government, statutory agencies and other public sector bodies.
What are the judges looking for?
The judges will be looking for innovation, practical and transferable measures, together with a commitment to continue energy conservation measures in to the future.
Who has won in the past?
Previous winners of the Public Sector category include:
- 2006 Ballymena Borough Council - energy savings project to reduce consumption and emissions across the council's sites and buildings. Key innovations include the installation of renewable energy generators. There are now biomass, solar thermal and photovoltaic, wind and ground source technologies installed in council buildings;
- 2007 Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council - children's centre incorporating ground source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and individual heat recovery ventilation systems. It also has a rainwater harvesting system providing water for all toilet flushing. Compares with a typical nursery school, its energy usage is around 30% of that quoted in the Energy and Water Benchmarks for Maintained Schools in England.
- 2009 Summerfield Eco-village Partnership - Family Housing Association (Birmingham) Ltd received the award in recognition for their £2.3 million Eco Village project in the Summerfield area of the city, working in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Urban Living, New World Solar and local residents. Largest renewable technology retrofit project in the UK.
